I am just wondering whether I need to apply a protective coating or waterproof layer (eg. Scotchguard) before I start wearing it? I am worried that if I do nothing, and get caught in the rain the leather will be destroyed. Can I use a normal waterproof as a ski jacket with layers? I am going snowboarding for the first time. I have a "normal" waterproof jacket from Millets (Peter Storm). It's fairly substantial...not a flimsy "mac" but it doesn't have a fleecy lining...just a mesh. I am wanting to avoid the extra cost of a "ski-jacket" if I don't need one (I DO have ski pants for the waterproofing as I expect to be on my ass a lot!). Do I really need to by a "ski jacket"? I have looked at a few forums and on many they seem to be saying that actually waterproof jackets for skiing can be a pain because even though they are "breathable", you still sweat like hell in them with all the activity. That said it looks like it's about -5 to -15 where I'm going (probably -15 is at night?). Sounds cold but I bet it's not so cold once you're out there working right? Any advice gratefully received.

what is the best way to wash a snowboard jacket? i have a light blue snowboard jacket, and it is getting dirty. it is a level 5 killtec jacket. it is breathable, waterproof, and windproof, and i don't want to wreck any of this! i was thinking of just running my washer through an empty HOT cycle to clean it of any detergents, then just running the jacket through a cold cycle with no detergent, and letting it air dry. the laundry tag on it says machine wash in 30 degrees on the permanent press cycle. no tumble drying, no drycleaning, no ironing. how does this sound? does anyone have any recommendations?

Waterproofing a suede jacket? I bought a nice suede jacket and matching purse last year and never got a chance to wear it. I decided I am going to take it with me on a trip to see family in Iowa. I know it is very snowy and wet there, so would it be important for me to waterproof my jacket and purse before I go? I got a can of waterproofing when I bought it, but never used it.
