What are down jackets made of?

I'm shopping for a really warm down jacket for the coming winter. The few that I've seen that I like say that they are filled with 70% duck down feathers & 30% fowl feathers. The jackets don't seem very thick. They're also a bit expensive but I'm willing to spend the money, as long as I know I'l get my money's worth. Can anyone help?

  1. i think u answered your own question there...duck down feathers!! seriously though, the more % of duck down, itsy fluffy feathers it has ,the warmer its gonna be
  2. the jackets don't seem thick because they're not heated up. when you put a down jacket on, it absorbs your body's heat so it expands. then it gives the heat back to you, hence keeping you warm. if you're looking for a good down jacket, i highly recommend anything from The North Face. they're quite expensive, but well worth the money. also, jackets from Abercrombie & Fitch are also very warm
  3. They're made from various things. The best are 100% goose down. The more feathers they have and the less down, the less warm they will be. Good ones are pretty expensive--at least $100-$150. Read the tags and get the highest percentage of down that you can afford. Then try them on and see which one you like.
