  1. Because down is a natural insulator and keeps you warm.
  2. For insulation; as feathers have a hollow structure, insulating the blanket or garment with air.
  3. Down Feathers not only keep you warm but they are extremely light weight. They are ideal for winter jackets for both those reasons.
  4. To keep you warmer than regular cotton!
  5. To keep you warm. They were probably used in the first place because they were easy to get hold of. You simply kept the downy feathers when you plucked your poultry for dinner - something we never have to do these days.
  6. Feathers were used as they were readily available to the owners of the fowl. One thing: if feathers get wet in the winter they do not keep you warm. Wool is the better alternative it allows your body to breath easier.
