Whats up with down jackets and precipitation? Are they really useless after they get a little wet?

From some melted snow on the shoulders or a little bit of light rain... Is the jacket ruined forever if that happens? Or is it useless only until it dries again? Can somebody clear this up? I'm looking to buy a North Face down jacket, it isn't waterproof.
